SEI Strategic Visioning

In 2008, the SEI Board of Governors met and put forth the following strategic vision for the profession 25 years into the future:

In 2033, the Structural Engineering profession will be:

–A unique, fully engaged profession with a strong identity;
–Recognized for the contribution the profession makes to

•public safety and risk management,
•economic and sustainable use of resources,
•the use of innovative technologies, and
•the creation of inspiring structures;

–Stewards of the built environment; and
–Attractive to the best and brightest.

At that time, the goal was to envision the desired characteristics for the structural engineering profession at large. The stated vision statement represented the long view of 25 years into the future. Four years after it met to establish the above statement, the SEI Board of Governors met again to build upon the strategic vision of 2008 and specifically to identify topics and strategic issues that it would like to consider for action.
At the conclusion of three meetings dedicated to this process, the SEI Board of Governors identified the following two main topics as high-priority initiatives:

•The Future Structural Engineer, and
•Future Structural Codes & Standards

Orthotropic Bridge Conference Proceedings Now Available

Recognizing this is a specialized area of bridge engineering, the Sacramento Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sponsored the Orthotropic Bridge conferences so all engineers around the world can share their ideas, insights and projects.

In 2004, the first Orthotropic Bridge Conference was held in Sacramento. It was a pioneering effort by California bridge engineers passionate about the application and future development of Orthotropic configuration for bridges. They recognized the value of offering other professionals in their field the opportunity to join and share their knowledge and experience. That first conference attracted representatives from 11 countries and received excellent comments from many who attended.

In 2008, Sacramento Section of ASCE along with the approval of the US Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) conducted the 2nd International Orthotropic Bridge Conference. There had been many advances in research and many projects had been built in the intervening four years and it was a very informative and enriching conference.

Proceedings from both the 2004 and 2008 International Orthotropic Bridge Conferences are now available. Download the order form and get your copy today!

SEI Local Activities

Wacker DriveYou are invited to join the events and activities of your local SEI Chapter or Structural Technical Group. Local groups offer a variety of opportunities for professional development, student and community outreach, mentoring, scholarships, networking, technical tours, etc. To connect with your local SEI Chapter or STG, visit the SEI Local Activities Division webpage.

The SEI Illinois Chapter recently held a tour of the Wacker Drive construction site to see one of the highest profile projects being conducted in Chicago this construction season. The tour provided insight into the structural challenges of reconstructing Wacker Drive through the heart of the City. Visit the ASCE YouTube site to view a special video of the tour.

The SEI Pittsburgh Chapter recently hosted an event in conjunction with Steel Day and conducted a Structural Scavenger Hunt in October. Click here for more information on future SEI Pittsburgh Chapter activities. Plans are in the works for providing members the opportunity to get involved with outreach programs in addition to attaining PDH’s in any one of the dinner presentations planned for the 2011/2012 year.

ASCE/SEI Teams Investigate Structural Damage

New Zealand Parking Garage Damage
